What is a cleaning kit and why do I need one? Tape cleaning kits are used to clean the heads of a tape drive. The head is a component in the tape drive itself that reads and writes data to the tape. By not cleaning your tape drive, you allow dust to build up on the heads which may compromise the integrity of the data read from or written to the tape. Seagate recommends that you clean your tape drive with a Seagate cleaning kit as described in your user's manual.
Why are two numbers shown for a cartridge's capacity? (i.e. 20/40GB) Tape drive capacities are referred to in both native and compressed capacities. Seagate lists both capacities in our data cartridge product listings. For example, a 20/40GB DDS-4 data cartridge has a native capacity of 20GB and a compressed capacity of 40GB. Compressed capacities assume a 2:1 compression ration. The capacities listed with our tape drives are compressed capacities and also assume a 2:1 compression ratio.
How many data cartridges do I need? The number of data cartridges that you need to effectively protect yourself from data loss depends on what backup strategy you employ. We have created a short white paper that covers two different tape rotation schemes. Choose the one that works best for your situation.
